While pattern and color are often the most exciting considerations when choosing wallpaper, practicality and installation concerns can also play a role. That’s why many homeowners turn to stick on wallpaper—also known as removable wallpaper or repositionable wallpaper—to achieve the look of an impactful design without a lengthy renovation process.
The self-adhesive wallpaper is typically sold pre-cut in strips and requires no soaking or wall pasting like traditional wallpaper, according to the manufacturers. But this doesn’t mean that it’s a breeze to install—there are a few important tips to keep in mind before getting started.
Peel, Stick, Transform: The Rise of Stick-On Wallpaper in Interior Design
First, create a guideline on the wall using a pencil or tape to help you align your first strip of stick-on wallpaper properly. Then, peel away about 12 inches of the backing at the top of the wall and place the paper against the wall, creating a slight overhang at the ceiling and baseboard. Once the first strip is in place, use a plastic smoothing tool to flatten and remove any air bubbles as you work down the wall, making sure the pattern lines up with your guidelines.
As you continue to apply the strip, you can trim excess paper at the ceiling or baseboard with a sharp blade. And, while the adhesive should last years (depending on temperature, humidity and your wall preparation), it’s best to clean it with a damp cloth or mild cleaning solution to ensure its longevity.
